Safe Passage Documentary Film Screening

December 6th, 7pm-9pm
Chapel Hill Friends Meeting 531 Raleigh Road Chapel Hill, NC 27514
Come learn about Safe Passage (www.safepassage.org), an NGO working with the community around the Garbage Dump
in Guatemala City. We will be showing "Manos de Madres", a film that follows a Safe Passage mother's life around the dump, and a recent documentary by a Guatemalan TV station. After the films, long time Safe Passage Board Member Arnie Katz recently returned volunteer Tristan Green will lead a discussion about the project, about local support activities in NC, and about an upcoming service trip by UNC's Ultimate Frisbee teams.

Planning Update!

Hi everyone,
The school year is well underway and we have started planning our service trip to Guatemala. I have met with Darksiders and Pleiades and have received great interest and response. More players have expressed interest than there is space for on the trip so it will take some time to figure out exactly who is going, but everyone who expressed interest in the trip is committed supporting the trip and helping with fundraising. There will be a trip meeting next week to go over different fundraising strategies and idea and we will keep everyone posted on what we come up with. We are encouraging players to participate in the local Safe Passage 5k Race on October 13th (http://www.safepassagenc.org/Safe_Passage/5k.html). Keep an eye out here for information about our next Fundraising event coming soon!
Thanks for your support!

UNC Ultimate Frisbee Service Trip to Guatemala

"What is this trip all about?", you may ask. Here's the run down:

Members of UNC's Men's and Women's Ultimate Frisbee teams will be taking a week-long service trip to volunteer with Safe Passage (www.safepassage.org), an NGO in Guatemala City, from June 2nd-8th, 2013. While there we will volunteer in all different parts of the project, but will focus on introducing Ultimate Frisbee to youth through the Sports Program at Safe Passage.

I have had this idea for over a year now, and I am excited to finally put it into motion. I first traveled to Safe Passage in Guatemala in the spring of 2009 after graduating from high school. I volunteered as a Teacher's Assistant and, during those first three months, began relationships with the children and project that remain strong today. During the summer of 2011, I spent another 3 months at Safe Passage volunteering as an English and Guitar Teacher. Now, I constantly think of ways that I can connect my day-to-day life in North Carolina to Safe Passage in Guatemala, and this is how the idea for a service trip with UNC's Ultimate Frisbee teams was born. Now it is a reality, and you can help make it happen!
